THE three operation sites of Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Ltd in Madang celebrated the National Mining Safety Week recently with strict observance of the stringent Covid-19 pandemic control measures.
The Kurumbukari mine, Basamuk refinery and Madang base did their own safety week programmes with awareness on the theme: “Getting back to basics in risk management”.
The company’s Basamuk refinery came up with its own sub-theme for the safety week which was “Environment pollution: disposing wastes responsibly” and saw the three main site departments; the refinery chemical laboratory; the fix department; and, the camp management, placing greater emphasis on understanding the safer and responsible way of disposing wastes generated at the work place.
At Basamuk refinery, the three departments prepared and demonstrated how they managed waste generated in their operations.
The company, in a statement, said Ramu NiCo, being the first nickel/cobalt mine developer in PNG, was responsible and continued to encourage all its employees to take care of their health and safety and always emphasised safety and health consciousness.
“Furthermore, the company values occupational health and safety of all its employees, contractors and general public and its stakeholders as a priority thus this forms an integral part of the management of its operations at its work sites at Kurumbukari mine, Basamuk refinery and Madang base,” according to the statement .
“Ramu NiCo also plays a leading role within its operations in promoting HSE management systems in line with Australia and New Zealand Standard 4801 to minimise related injuries and/or fatalities.”
