A 40 foot Yamaha Dinghy full with 17 passengers and market goods to be sold at the Madang Town Market were rescued out at sea by Ramu NiCo’s Basamuk Refinery Company Ship (Angel), after drifting for two and a half hours along the Astrolabe Bay in Rai Coast of Madang on Tuesday 6th of September.
The boat was travelling from Warai Village of Rai Coast District with passengers and was sailing across the sea when it encountered motor problem between Tabali and Madang Town. According to the skipper they should have drifted out into open sea if it wasn’t for Ramu NiCo’s Vessel (Angel) that rescued them. After drifting for almost two and a half hours they were spotted by Ramu NiCo’s vessel; Angel doing its normal route from Madang sailing to the Company’s Refinery at Basamuk.
Captain of Ramu NiCo’s Angel vessel, Captain Joseph Suad said, they had to bring everyone on board while towing the Yamaha Dinghy back to Basamuk refinery prior to continuing their trip into Madang.
“The company’s two vessels, (Angel and MV Carrie) have always been rescuing locals from Rai Coast District who may have been attacked by sea pirates or sometimes have engine problems and even low with fuel and would drift along the passage,” Captain John said.
Michael Kundi, a passenger from the dinghy said they had no hope while drifting at sea but were expecting to look over the horizon to see dinghies returning from Madang in the afternoon. “I want to thank Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited for rescuing us from a potential life or death situation,” Kundi said.
The dinghy left Warai village at 06:00 am and was left drifting for two hours before being spotted by Ramu NiCo’s vessel at around 09:00 am while drifting along the Astrolabe Bay between Madang and the Rai Coast District.
