The HSE Department of Ramu NiCo Company reported that its first quarter DSTP (deep sea tailings Pipeline) system awareness for 2022 was successful conducted on Karkar and Bagbag islands in the Sumkar district of Madang province from April 17th-22nd, 2022.
It was a collaborative effort from concerned parties including Ramu NiCo, MRA, CEPA and the Madang provincial government. This year’s DSTP target audience were students from primary and secondary schools on the islands. The awareness covered three primary schools, two on Karkar and one on Bagbag and the Karkar Secondary school, however, invitations were open for the rural population and other groups including youth groups local government members and village elders to participate.
The DSTP awareness targeted schools particularly as these children could learn about the importance of DSTP, and can influence their parents and their peer groups about DSTP. In future, the younger generation may have sufficient knowledge about DSTP, and they can make vital decisions regarding DSTP issues that may arise.
Over one thousand seven hundred copies of awareness materials including. booklets, pamphlets, Charts and posters were evenly distributed to the four schools and the rural population as well. School packs/gifts were also presented to participating schools at the end of the awareness.
