Growing up on the outskirts of her hometown, Madang, Benna Taltal never thought that she would one day work for a big company like Ramu NiCo. She felt a deep sense of gratitude as she smiled from the Ramu NiCo float parade alongside her work colleagues.
The launch of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Anniversary celebration in Madang on Friday 29 August, 2025, was filled with joy and laughter. Ramu NiCo staff at the head office were all in their full work uniforms, carrying small PNG flags and ready to join the parade.
Two vehicles were provided: a 25-seater coaster bus and a truck, which Ms Taltal chose to ride on.
When the parade set off from the town’s Laiwaden Oval, Ms Taltal had the PNG flag design painted on her face and was swept up in the excitement, screaming “Happy 50th Independence” to the people on the roadsides.
She tossed small flags and balloons to the children along the roadside, completely absorbed in the pride of her country.
Reflecting on the theme of the 50th Anniversary celebration — “Celebrate our History, Inspire our Future” — Ms Taltal thought to herself:
“I work for a world-class mine that has brought significant development to project impact areas, and I have all the rights to celebrate to the fullest,” she spoke to her friend who was also shouting Happy Independence next to her.
Ramu NiCo has constructed the huge Banu Bridge, built classrooms and aid posts, supported health and education programs, sponsored students to tertiary institutions and developed agriculture projects for future sustainability. These were the reasons she felt proud to celebrate as a Ramu NiCo worker.
As Ms Taltal stood on the float during the country’s 50th Anniversary celebration, she felt overwhelmed with emotion. She was proud to represent Ramu NiCo and showcase the company’s efforts in improving the lives of the local community.
She was equally proud to be part of a country that has come so far in 50 years, despite facing many challenges.
The float parade was a success and Ms Taltal’s heart was filled with joy and gratitude.
She knew that none of this would have been possible without the support of Ramu NiCo and its commitment to creating a better future for all.
As she waved to the cheering crowd, Benna couldn’t help but think this was just the beginning.
She felt inspired to continue working hard and contributing to the development of her country and community.
She believes that with companies like Ramu NiCo and the determination of the people, the future of Papua New Guinea is bright and full of promise.
