This year will mark the second term for the only Nickel and Cobalt mining Giant in Papua New Guinea to send a team to participate in the well-renounced China Copper Cup’s Cooperative and Safety Management Skills Competition.

This year Ramu NiCo selected 5 candidates to participate in this one-month-long prestigious event in Beijing.

The 5 candidates were selected in various departments at Ramu NiCo’s Kurumbukari Mine site and Basamuk Refinery site and will attend the event on behalf of Ramu NiCo in Madang.

Two representatives of the team are from Basamuk Refinery Acid Treatment and Limestone Plants respectively while another two are from the Asset Protection and Mobile Equipment Departments respectively at the Kurumbukari Mine Site.  Furthermore, the company included a female employee from its Port Moresby Office as an additional staff to also participate in the one-month-long exercise.

Simon Irinub, a participant of the China Copper Cup from Usino Bundi District said he is very thrilled to be among this year’s 2025 candidates and expressed his satisfaction to Ramu NiCo as a longest serving employee at the Mine’s Mobile Equipment Department.

“I am happy that I got a chance and was selected by Ramu NiCo to travel and visit China for this prestigious event. My journey will be a journey-of-a-life-time as this will be my first time to leave my village at Danarum in Usino and venture out,” Simon said.

Malgen Ladam from Tugyag Village in Raicoast District also expressed his gratitude as a participant of the China Copper Cup in Beijing last year, “Last year, the team of Ramu NiCo did exceptionally well and came back home with individual medals. For this year’s competition, we will also try our best to represent well Ramu NiCo’s national employees as well as PNG’s image in the international stage.”

The five-people team including a woman will spend a day or two in Port Moresby before departing to China as scheduled.

Ramu NiCo’s Human Resources Deputy General Manager Mr Jeffers Heptol Teargun said the company has already prepared their tickets, passports and Visas for the 5 Employees and they will proceed as scheduled to attend the event for 2025.
