The only nickel and cobalt mine in Madang Province of Papua New Guinea, the Ramu NiCo Mine this year had supported the Kangal Festival in the Raicoast District with funds to host another successful event.
Ramu NiCo through its ongoing effort to support native cultural preservation in Madang Province has donated funding assistance on Tuesday 21st of October at the Provincial Capital to host the event in Raicoast District as a way to keep a bond between the community and the resources developer.
The Kangal Festival in an annually event since 2003 and is renowned for its vibrant display of traditional attire and dances, attracting visitors from across Papua New Guinea and abroad. It stands as a proud showcase of Raicoast District’s rich cultural heritage.
The festival itself is also listed in PNG National Culture Commission’s national events calendar among other events such as the National Kenu and Kundu festival in Alotau, Malagan Festival in Namatanai – New Ireland Province and others.
Ramu NiCo Community Affairs Deputy Superintendent, Mr. Kuipa Tonny, expressed gratitude to the Madang Cultural Bureau for its continued efforts in promoting the festival in the province and the rich culture and tradition of where Ramu NiCo’s Basamuk Refinery is located.
“This event not only celebrates the identity of the Raicoast people but also places Madang on the cultural map of PNG and the world,” Mr. Tonny said.
Chairman of the Kangal Festival Organizing Committee, Mr. Kevin Murray, thanked Ramu NiCo for its ongoing support, announcing that the Kangal Festival is among the finest in country, showcasing some of the most exquisite traditional regalia and performances.
“Ramu NiCo’s contribution is deeply appreciated and vital to the festival’s success,” he said.
Festival founder Mr. Soge Dilame also extended his appreciation to Ramu NiCo’s continuous support over the past three years.
“The festival cannot be a successful event without support from corporate houses in province such as Ramu NiCo Management ( MCC ) Limited.”
“I also want to take this time and appeal to our current government in Madang to also step in and promote such event that is significant to the preservation of our culture,” Mr. Dilame said.
