Ramu NiCo Delivers Awareness on its Deep-Sea Tailings Placement Program to Communities along Bogia District of Madang Province

This week, the Ramu Nickel and Cobalt Project in Madang Province has started a week-long program in Bogia District in Madang Province, as the targeted district to host awareness sessions at the district’s schools.

The aim of the program was to explain and educate coastal communities in Madang Province, especially in Bogia District on the process and strict measures the mine takes to neutralise all its waste that is being deposited onto the sea floor of the Bismarck Sea at Basamuk Bay in Rai Coast District.

Last year, in 2025, the mine hosted a similar exercise along Astrolabe Bay and continued the awareness towards communities located towards Rai Coast District, in Saidor Local Level Government area, that started at Bugajim Primary School. In 2023, the mine hosted a similar program at Long Island in Rai Coast District of Madang Province.

Ramu NiCo’s HSE Department has confirmed that this year’s DSTP awareness will be centred on how the mine has maintained, and continues to maintain, an eco-friendly marine ecosystem over the years since the inception of the mine to the current state.

The awareness is set to cover schools, started at Spirit Secondary School on the 28th of September, and will continue at Holy Malala Secondary School, Boroi Seventh Day Primary School, Joseph Aningi Primary School, and ending with Banara Primary School towards the end of this week.

Ramu NiCo’s Head Office in Madang has confirmed the presence of two national departments that have already accompanied the Nickel and Cobalt Mine Awareness Team into Bogia District. Their presence will be to answer questions related to Ramu NiCo’s Deep-Sea Tailings Placement Program at the Bismarck Sea in Madang Province.

The departments include the Papua New Guinea Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) and the Papua New Guinea Mineral Resources Authority, who will also explain their years of confidence in Ramu NiCo’s Deep-Sea Tailings Placement Program over the past years.

Other departments that also followed included Ramu NiCo’s Community Affairs Department and the Health Safety Environment Department.

The program is aimed at explaining to local coastal communities how the mine has been committed to maintaining its waste with zero harm to the marine ecosystem.

Ramu NiCo encourages communities to attend and learn about the strict processes and protocols that the mine undertakes to keep the marine and coastal environment and coastal communities safe.
