The quick actions and professional expertise of medical staff at the Ramu NiCo BSK Refinery Clinic helped save a six-year-old boy from a potentially life-threatening hand injury last Thursday evening.

The young boy, Avi Yux of Daiyin Village, sustained a severe hand injury in an accident on July 31 and was rushed to the refinery clinic after suffering a deep laceration that extended from the second joint of his index finger to his wrist. The wound measured approximately eight centimetres, exposed the bone, and was bleeding heavily, requiring immediate emergency treatment.

Avi is the son of Mr. Yux, an employee of the Ramu NiCo BSK Refinery.

The emergency call was received by the clinic at about 7:30 p.m., prompting doctors and nurses to immediately activate their emergency response procedures.

Recognising the seriousness of the injury and the vulnerability of a young child to blood loss and trauma, the medical team worked swiftly while family members comforted the frightened boy. Doctors and nurses collaborated to stabilise the injured hand before carrying out a series of critical medical procedures under strict sterile conditions.

The treatment included thorough wound cleaning, removal of debris, bleeding control, pain management, layered suturing, and protective dressing of the wound. Throughout the procedure, the medical team balanced technical precision with compassionate care, ensuring the child remained as comfortable as possible while successfully closing the deep wound.

Medical staff said the prompt treatment significantly reduced the risks of infection, excessive blood loss, and long-term complications.

Following the successful procedure, the child was administered a tetanus vaccination as a precaution. The medical team also provided his family with comprehensive advice on wound care, dressing changes, follow-up appointments, and safety measures to support a full recovery. The clinic will continue to monitor Avi’s progress during his recovery period.

The incident highlights the vital role played by the Ramu NiCo BSK Refinery Clinic in providing emergency healthcare services not only to company employees and their families but also to surrounding communities.

Operating around the clock, the clinic continues to strengthen its emergency preparedness through well-trained medical personnel, standardized clinical procedures, and patient-centred healthcare services.
