A total of 110 Ramu NiCo employees have received certificates after successfully completing a comprehensive workplace safety and emergency preparedness training program aimed at strengthening the company’s capacity to respond effectively to emergencies.
The certificate presentation was held on 21 September 2026 for employees based at Ramu NiCo’s Madang office following the successful completion of the two-month training program conducted by trainer Edward Warkia.
The training brought together both Papua New Guinean and Chinese employees, providing participants with practical knowledge and skills in workplace safety, emergency response and hazard management.
The program covered key areas including safety awareness, fire extinguisher use, hazard identification and management, emergency assembly procedures and headcounts.
One of the major highlights of the training was a practical fire demonstration, during which participants were shown how to correctly operate fire extinguishers and respond safely and effectively to a workplace fire emergency.
Participants were also reminded of the importance of immediately assembling at designated emergency gather points and conducting accurate headcounts to ensure all employees are accounted for during an emergency.
According to Human Resource Training Officer Fiona Helori, the training provided valuable knowledge and increased her confidence in responding to emergency situations.
“We learned a lot from this training and now feel more prepared to handle emergencies,” Ms Helori said.
She also welcomed the opportunity for national and Chinese employees to participate in the training together.
“It was also great to see both Chinese and national employees coming together and learning together,” she said.
The successful completion of the program and presentation of certificates marks another important step in Ramu NiCo’s ongoing commitment to workplace safety and employee development.
Deputy General Manager for Human Resource, Jeffers Teargun, said the company plans to introduce regular emergency drills to reinforce the knowledge gained through the training.
These drills are expected to cover different emergency scenarios, including fire, earthquake and medical emergencies, giving employees opportunities to practise their response procedures in realistic situations.
Mr Teargun said continuous training and practical exercises would help ensure employees remained prepared to respond appropriately should an emergency occur.
The company believes that investing in workplace safety training not only protects employees but also contributes to a safer, more productive and responsible working environment.
The presentation of the 110 safety training certificates therefore represents more than the completion of a training course. It demonstrates the employees’ commitment to learning, preparedness and maintaining a strong safety culture across Ramu NiCo’s operations.
